Hain's career on "life support"

Looks like Peter 'no shame' Hain will be spending more time with his constituents after the Guardian revealed that he failed to disclose a whopping £100,000 of donations to his failed deputy leadership campaign.

According to Labour sources Hain's career is on "life support" and his resignation could come as early as this weekend.

Work and Pensions Secretary? Andy Burnham? Alan Milburn? Mike O'Brien?

I don't understand why people within any political party should have to raise money to get themselves promoted. How is the money spent?

It just gets worse for him as weeks/days go by. Just goes to show that when you have two jobs it's easy to take your eye off the ball. Support workers are very important for those in power. Guess he chose the wrong ones.

"How is the money spent?": As if it's going out of fashion, judging by Peter Hain's campaign expenditure.

"Support workers are very important for those in power. Guess he chose the wrong ones."

But were they 'disorganised' or was he?

Gordon would have to be insane not to offer it to Milburn at this juncture. A public rapprochement with the Blairites would give him a significant boost.

It certainly would but with Milburn having been out of frontline politics for so long I think he'll be overlooked this time. Burnham is too inexperienced and O'Brien has gone as far as he can.

Which just leaves Caroline Flint.

Don't you need a brain to be Work and Pensions Sec?

As Mike Parry might say: "bit harsh!"

I think she's competent enough to do the job and she would certainly brighten up what is a pretty dull cabinet. It could also be a politically astute move, appealing to Worcester woman and all that.
