Hague set to replace Osborne

He may be a smug git but give Vince Cable his due, not only has he demolished the Tories almost amateurish proposals for Northern Rock, he's almost certainly ended George Osborne's tenure as Shadow Chancellor.

Osborne has never before looked so out of his depth as he did today. Cable's comment that the Shadow Chancellor was in danger of castrating himself as he straddled both sides of the fence summed up the incoherent strategy adopted by the Shadow Treasury team ever since the Northern Rock crisis began.

I'd say William Hague is odds on to replace him at the next reshuffle.

Which just leaves the question of whether Osborne was deliberately done up like a kipper or conveniently done up like a kipper? Either way, David Cameron will sleep easily tonight knowing that he's seen off yet another of his leadership rivals.

  • John Redwood: 'How Mr Darling lost the government's economic reputation' - "The Northern Rock crisis has undermined this government's economic reputation, and deservedly so."

  • Tom Watson: "The fascinating thing about this affair is how it has exposed David Cameron's uncertainty when faced with tough choices. The Tory leader's response to Northern Rock would have won an Olympic medal for back-flipping."

Cameron and leadership is an oxymoron

    Or perhaps an oxycamoron?

Just moron would do. Although give him his due, he's got a bit of the silent assassin about him. A quality every potential PM needs.

I so wanted Osborne to do well, and yet expected him to fail.

At this time in the mess there are only two options. Nationalise or let Northern Crock go under. Poor Osborne can't call for the former and hasn't got the guts to call for the latter, so he's on a loser with this one. However, his repetitive use of "ditherer" to describe Brown was effective, so I'll only give him 5/10 overall.

    A fair assessment.

I think Hague has previously stated that the Foreign Office is the only shadow job he is intetested in.

I would move David Davis to shadow the Treasury, and make George Osborne party chairman in place of nice-but-ineffectual Caroline Spelman. Not only is DD consistently the most effective operator on the Tory front bench, he is also a former chairman of the Public Accounts Committee so knows his stuff.

This would also open up a vacancy at Home Affairs into which Dave could promote rising star Chris Grayling.

Maybe Hague has written the next GE off already? DD's definitely gone as far as he can with Home Affairs. Shadow Chancellor might suit him. As for Grayling, there's something about him that gives me the creeps. I'm sure he's a decent enough bloke but I can't look at him without thinking of the Secret Army.
