It's January 2010 and the Tories are a million points ahead in the polls

Co-founder of YouGov, Peter Kellner, is now the Poet Laureate. Geoff Hoon is now the leader of the Labour Party. Readers of ConservativeHome are still calling for David Cameron to be more radical and the Mirror's Kevin Maguire is convinced Labour has time to turn it around.

Meanwhile, Chris Grayling still looks like an extra from Allo Allo. The wind changed and David Miliband's face stayed like that. And the Daily Pundit has seen the light and started a gardening blog.

He was on some midlands politics programme a few months ago and he looked and sounded the part. Very convincing. And throughout the interview he reeked of ambition. A dark horse if ever there was one.

As for his 'base' that's a different matter altogether.
