A 26-year-old Conservative Party supporter has been unmasked as the Home Office mole. Christopher Galley, a former Tory council candidate, is now said to be in hiding for his own safety.
The story so far. Two years ago, disillusioned with his career as a junior civil servant in the Home Office immigration directorate, Galley approached the Tory party looking for work. He was eventually interviewed by Damian Green, the shadow immigration minister, but 'failed to land a job' says the Times.
The Times also reports that shortly after his interview with Damian Green, 'Galley resumed his civil service career, which included work in the private office of Jacqui Smith.'
Following his arrest, Galley is alleged to have told police that Damian Green "induced" him to leak the documents. This could explain why Green's home was searched and his phone records and bank statements were seized by police.
Meanwhile, the Telegraph reports that Galley was interviewed at Paddington Green, the most high security police station in Britain. Government insiders are pointing to his detention at the maximum security police station, 'as an indication of how serious any resulting charges could be, and how they might be linked to matters of national security.'
Questions are now being asked about Galley's motives for leaking the documents. There is growing speculation that he is just one of several Tory moles to have infiltrated government departments in order to destabilise the government.
A report in today's Independent claiming that the Westminster offices of senior conservatives have been bugged has strengthened rumours that at least two more shadow ministers are expecting a visit from the police. I'll keep you posted.

"It is alleged" - where did this allegation come from? It's not a leak, is it? Shouldn't that be investigated with the same "thoroughness" as the original allegation against Mr Green?
"he's a mole" - this would require him to have been a Conservative who deliberately went into government in order to embarrass the current government. Would such a "mole" have subsequently applied for a job with the Conservative party? do me a favour!
